The past four days have been a living nightmare for me as I fell for a stupid stupid Instagram makeup fraud scam.
Being a new beauty blogger with a fairly low following and a low-budget unable to buy products to blog about. I am always on the look out for good deals to try and better my business until I start getting sponsorship posts. And companies to send me products to review. Anyways….I am totally embarrassed and have learned a hard lesson.
I fell for the oldest scam in the book on Instagram an account started following me selling makeup online for great prices. They were claiming they were a Sephora and Ulta distributor. Which I know now after talking to Sephora and Ulta, there is NO such thing as distributors from these companies. Anyone claiming to be is a fake, fraud waiting for someone like me to fall for their scam.
Ebay, Instagram, Twitter, and Amazon is rampant with these fakes waiting to take your money through Paypal “friends and family”. If it’s, to good to be true, it is a fake.
Watch out for generic accounts called Makeup Online_ or Makeup Online 3456 etc..
Watch the photos on the Instagram accounts closely, if they have other people’s watermarks on their photos. If they over talk about how they are so proud to work for Sephora and Ulta.
After they drained my bank account, sent me fake Paypal emails btw Paypal doesn’t use Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo. Five attempts to hack into many of my accounts. After me being on the phone with Paypal all day every day for four days we finally had them shut down and all of my money returned. These people had six Instagram accounts all interlinked scamming people all over the world.
Moral of the story, if you think it’s a fraud it is. Follow your gut feeling, which I stupidly didn’t!
Common products that are fakes / reproductions are:
So many others………..
Buy only from Sephora, Ulta or the brands websites directly only. Keep track of all of your Paypal transactions, change your passwords very often, passwords you have to physically write down on a piece of paper because you won’t remember them. Common sense.
Don’t fall for my mistake, please. You run into a problem call Paypal Fraud and Security department right away. They are excellent and will work with you every step of the way. Also, your bank, freeze any transaction you think you should be worried about.
Thank you, Paypal for your great service in helping me and potentially hundreds of others.
